Moravian Karst + Pernstein Castle

Been there recently?

In the Czech Republic there are a lot of beautiful and interesting cities, castles, fortresses, cathedrals and churches, in a word, a lot of architectural monuments created by human hands.
One of the most visited, unusual and best-preserved medieval castles in Europe is Pernstein Castle, built in the 13th century.
The castle in which, due to its photogenic nature, about fifty films and TV series by Czech and foreign filmmakers were filmed. for example: “Princess Fantaghiro”, “Seven Crows”, “Salt over Gold”, “Batory” Yakubiskov or in the vampire horror film “Van Helsing” with Hugh Jackman in the title role. Also, the historical series “Borgia” and the video clip of the famous Icelandic singer Emiliana Torrini were filmed here.

But the Czech Republic is also rich in the creations of mother nature. And one of the most famous places of nature in the Czech Republic is
Moravian Karst. This is one of the most beautiful nature reserves and
one of the largest karst cave systems in Europe. It is located in South Moravia, in the vicinity of the city of Brno.
The total length of the massif is about 25 kilometers, and the number of caves exceeds 1100, the total area of the entire territory of the national park is 92 kilometers!

Of the more than 1100 caves of the Moravian Karst, 4 caves are accessible today – these are Katerzynska, Balcarka, Stolbno-Shoshuvska, and, of course, the most famous and popular – Punkva. During the tour, you will be able to see a lot of stalactites, stalagmites of bizarre shapes, as well as helictites – formations growing parallel to the ground.
One of the main attractions is the Macocha abyss (translated as Stepmother), its depth is 138 meters, and a piece of sky is visible from behind the ceiling that once collapsed.
Hiking underground journey continues with a walk along the underground river Punkva, 40 meters deep and flowing into an underground lake. Here, associations with the Lake City from Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” involuntarily come to mind.
Don’t miss the opportunity to connect architecture with nature.
